Why After Festivity Breakouts?

When we are on holiday, we tend to over indulge. To some extent this is allowed, otherwise the essence of holidaying is corrupted, however there are things that we should know about the holiday activities and its correlation to acne.

During holidays, we tend to eat and drink more. Holiday food is often fatty and sugary so we tend to shock our body systems into hyperactivity. This is not good considering your acne pimples are cause originally by over active sebaceous glands. That is why we have the breakout of a lifetime always after festivities.

The secret is this: Alcohol is not bad for you!

One might think that indulging in a bottle or two of wine or your favorite brew might be part cause of your breakout…Wrong! There has been no direct relationship suggested under any research that alcohol is bad for your skin. However, alcohol has dehydrating properties, hence your hang-over. Dry skin might cause your skin to be brittle and prone to breakage which might allow bacteria to infiltrate and cause acne!

So what to do during the festivities?

  • Drink lots of water: Water always helps in your therapy, but bump it up to a few more glasses. If you indulge in inebriating drinks, I personally suggest a 2:1 ratio (alcohol:water). That way you will end up not being dehydrated, and better still, not get drunk as fast!!
  • Avoid fatty foods: Okay this one might be tough to obey, but the little thing help. Say, if your having chicken, take off the skin, which contains most cholesterol and munch away the rest.
  • Avoid those sugary drinks: It just happens that Christmas falls in the cold season so you might want to take an extra cup of coffee and chocolate, DON’T! Caffeine and the sugar in these drinks will put your skin into overdrive and you know how that ends up!
  • Take vitamins: Fresh vegetables may come in short supply during the winter, so vitamins are the best alternative. Also vitamins have been shown to help int the treatment of acne.
